Scottish Universities Squash is a fine example of a sport in which the partnership of the University sector and the National Governing Body has paid dividends to the benefit of both bodies.
In a move away from weekly SUS fixtures in this sport, the Scottish Universities Squash League and Team Championship for both Men and Women will now be contested over a single weekend event in November at the National Squash Academy at Heriot-Watt University. This event will guarantee quality in the league and provide a definite structure and new impetus to the event. The top teams from this event will then go on to qualify for the British Universities Squash Championships and other knockout competitions running from February onwards, against teams from the best Squash-playing universities in Britain.
In an addition to the Squash calendar, the first SUS individual tournament will take place in early February, in collaboration with Scottish Squash who will host their age group Championships over the same weekend. Because of this collaborative scheduling, Universities will be able to field their top players in both these events, benefiting the quality of the event and the Squash played at it.
Squads for the Home Nations Squash Tournament will be selected from the top performers at these Championships for matches against teams from English, Welsh and Northern Irish Universities.
The weekly Squash programme for university club players of a good standard will continue, however, as many teams will continue to play in their local or regional leagues, guaranteeing regular squash of a good standard to many students.
