There is a fine Rugby tradition amongst the Scottish Universities, reflecting the popularity of the sport in Scotland. University sides have always played a large part in the history of Rugby in Scotland, having provided a number of internationals and future internationals, and helped to develop countless talented club players and officials.
The Scottish Universities Leagues comprises 40 men’s and women’s teams playing in an eight-league structure, with many universities fielding second, third or even fourth teams - ensuring that there'll always be options for playing Rugby, even if you fail to get into the first team.
Matches are played on Wednesday afternoons, between October and Christmas, with the winners of both the men's and women's Scottish University Leagues crowned Scottish Universities Champions. Successful teams also qualify for the British Universities Sports Association knockout competitions - to compete against the best Rugby-playing universities in Britain from February onwards, for a tilt at a coveted BUSA title. An exciting and new Scottish Universities Cup competition is being developed for the New Year.
Following trials in February, the Scottish Universities Rugby Squad is selected, with fixtures played against English and Welsh Universities on an Annual basis.
The sport now enjoys a working relationship with Scottish Rugby, which it is hoped will help to improve and strengthen the programme to the benefit of both bodies, and to improve and professionalise the delivery of competitive Rugby for Scottish students.
