Orienteering in Scottish Universities is dominated by The University of Edinburgh, but that doesn't mean that there are no student orienteers or opportunities to take up the sport out there.
Orienteering is essentially time trail around a set of control sites on an unseen mapped area. At its best, the sport is exciting and fast-paced, with each heat-of-the-moment route choice potentially marking the difference between success and failure. Many orienteers come to University already experienced in their sport, having come through the junior ranks, but the sport appeals to many as an exciting outdoor one, and it is a primary aim of SUS Orienteering to make it more accessible.
A training weekend will be held in Edinburgh in November, suitable for all abilities, with the Scottish Universities Championships being held in February - including a SUS Novice Championship for newcomers to the sport. Many Scottish students will compete in the British Universities Championships in March, and in further competition throughout the summer.
Transport and information will be provided by SUS, where possible, as the aim is to work in partnership with existing Orienteering Clubs in Scotland, and the Scottish Orienteering Association to effectively promote and facilitate Orienteering to a student audience.
