SUS Netball is a strong league, with a number of students involved in the Scottish National set-up at both junior and senior level. The standard of netball is therefore very high, with matches closely contested. Many university netball teams take part in local and national competitions in addition to the SUS programme, broadening the experience of playing netball, increasing the number of fixtures played and helping teams and individuals to swiftly improve their standards.
Inter-university fixtures in the SUS league are played weekly from October to February, on either Wednesdays or Saturdays dependant on other playing commitments. The most successful then qualify for the BUSA knockout competitions from late February onwards, and take on the best universities from across the United Kingdom in the British Universities Championships.
The sport is developing quickly in Scottish Universities, with a great deal of verve and passion amongst the players and a lively and competitive scene to play in at whatever level. In recent times, the University of Stirling has hosted a specific event for lower teams to provide more playing and development opportunities.
The Scottish Universities Championship takes place early in the academic year and doubles as a trial for the Scottish Universities Netball Squad. Those selected then go through a rigorous training programme involving three or more sessions and fixtures against district or national teams, in preparation for annual fixtures against Welsh, Northern Irish and English Universities.
