Karate

Scottish Universities foster a number of forms of martial arts, with Karate the most popular and successful. Many Scottish students compete to a very high level on the British and even international scene. This elite success is balanced by the excellent training and coaching afforded to students of all levels from beginner upwards, which can make the attainment of a black belt within the duration of a university career possible.

All Scottish Universities Karate events are contested under WKF rules. The Scottish Universities Karate Championships take place around Easter each year, with male and female events for both kata and kumite, divided into novice and senior categories. The Scottish Universities Team Cup is a team competition focussed solely on team kumite, with both male and female events.

In addition, Scottish Universities take part in the British Universities Karate Championships and many individuals and teams excel in this event with many medals won by students from north of the border. Most notable is Heriot Watt's Calum Robb, a previous SUS sportsman of the year, who has won over 10 gold British University medals over the last 6 years.
