Scottish Universities foster a number of forms of martial arts, with Karate the most popular and successful. Many Scottish students compete to a very high level on the British and even international scene, but this elite success is balanced by the excellent training and practising opportunities and coaching afforded to students, which can make the attainment of a black belt within the duration of a university career possible.
All Scottish Universities Karate events are contested under WKF rules, and all competitors must be licensed with their governing body to ensure that the appropriate insurance arrangements are in place in the event of accident.
The Scottish Universities Karate Championships take place each Easter, incorporating both kata and kumite for all grades, and divided into wide classes according to ability and experience. The Scottish Universities League takes place over three events - in October, November and January as a team competition focussed solely on team kumite. Each team comprises three competitors of mixed abilities and grades.
In addition, Scottish Universities take part in the British Universities Karate Championships and many individuals and teams excel in this event with many medals won by students from north of the border.
