Hockey

HockeyThe Hockey Leagues are one of the most competitive leagues in the SUS programme. With fine access to both excellent facilities and coaching and with a great record of success from University Hockey players, the high standards set by the programme look set to continue.

The National Hockey Academy is based at The University of Edinburgh's Peffermill Playing Fields, and the SUS Hockey programme is able to make use of this excellent facility.

Inter-university competition takes place on Wednesday afternoons from October to mid-February, with some Universities fielding three teams in the three tier SUS league. The top division of both the men’s and women’s programme are very highly competitive with some high-quality hockey and players on display. The best teams in these leagues qualify for BUSA knockout competition from late-February onwards, and face the best teams from the rest of the UK in the various British Universities Championships.

An annual cup competition takes place for both men’s, women’s, and mixed teams from all institutions; providing a day of competition, fun and a fine opportunity for teams to mix.

Trials for the Scottish Universities Teams take place in early February each year, with these teams having some recent success in fixtures against student teams from the other home nations.

In addition, many teams from Scottish Universities Hockey Clubs also take part in local, regional and national leagues - both indoor and outdoor - providing more opportunities for hockey for a wide range of abilities during the course of the season, and making a telling contribution to the sport in the wider community.
