Gaelic Football is a relatively new sport in the SUS programme, but as there is a strong concentration of Irish Students in Scottish Universities the sport has always been a popular one. That's not to say that the sport is restricted solely to Irish students, though, as the sport has really taken off in Scottish Universities, with some success.
The Scottish Universities League comprises nine teams, with fixtures played weekly between October and December. The top four teams qualify for the British Universities Gaelic Football Championships, held in Birmingham over a weekend in February, where they compete against the best teams from across the British Isles. The British Universities Champion is subsequently invited to take part in the Irish Universities Championship.
The Scottish Universities Championship takes place in the spring, with the eight best teams from the Scottish Universities competing in an open knockout cup over three successive weeks.
Additionally, in recent times, a Women’s League has been set up, with six women’s teams in operation throughout the sector. This has proved to be successful initiative, with the opportunities for playing the game continuing to expand in Universities across Scotland.
