Scottish Student fencing joined fully with Scottish Universities Sport in 2008 following on from consultation with all universities who currently had a fencing club.

Since 2008 our structure has changed and we are now presided over by SUS and BUCS in co-operation with our current Sport Development Co-ordinator, Jennifer McMillan.

The current competition structure for Student Fencing includes:

BUCS Team Qualifiers (also known as the Scottish Conference) – A team event comprising of two divisions for the men’s event and currently only one division for the women’s event. To confirm which division your university is currently in, please see the BUCS website at http://www.bucs.org.uk/ or speak to your club captain/committee. Each year teams are promoted and demoted from each division with some teams progressing successfully to the Northern Premier League. For more information on this league system please see the BUCS website. In the BUCS format universities will fence each other at all three weapons, the victor is decided over the total number of hits scored rather than the number of weapons or bouts won. This event is held on the last weekend in October or the first weekend in November.

BUCS Individuals Championships – An individual event where fencers have the opportunity to represent their university and compete against some of the top fencers in Britain. This is the first opportunity on the student fencing calendar to qualify for the Scottish Student Team for the Student 5 Nations event. This event is held in Nottingham on the first weekend in December.

SUS Team Championships – A team event comprising of multiple divisions where universities can enter up to 3 teams per event. Each year teams are promoted and demoted from each division and medals awarded to the winning teams. The format for this event differs from the BUCS format in that rather than fencing each university at all three weapons each university will enter separate teams for each weapon and meaning that two weapons will be fought on one day and the third weapon will be fought on the second day. For further information on this please speak to your club captain/committee. The date for this event has been changing for the past few years however we are currently seeking a permanent date which will suit all the universities if possible.

SUS Beginners Championships – An individual event for participants who have been fencing for two years or less. This is an excellent opportunity for student fencers to come together to test their abilities against opponents of a similar level. It is an excellent competition for those just starting out in fencing and an opportunity to become part of the wider social circuit of fencing. This event is held at the start of February.

SUS Individual Championships – An individual event for all students who attend and Higher Education facility in Scotland. This is an opportunity to represent your university and qualify for the Scottish Student Team for the Student 5 Nations event. It is also one of the main social fixtures of the student fencing calendar with the host university normally organising a night out after the event. This event is held at the end of February/start of March.

Student 5 Nations – A team event for the best fencers from Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The selection criteria for this event are;

A – Achieving the highest result of any student fencer at a Scottish university or being the highest placed Scot (i.e. Scottish origin but attending an educational establishment outside of Scotland) at the BUCS Individual Championships.

B – Winning the SUS Individual Championships

C – Being the highest ranked student fencer at a Scottish university or being the highest placed Scot (i.e. Scottish origin but attending an educational establishment outside of Scotland) on the British rankings by the selection date.

The selection date for this year is 1st March 2010. Those who have qualified will be notified within two weeks of this date and will be required to indicate their acceptance of their place on the team by the end of March. This event is usually held in June after the exam period.

We also run training events which are open to student and non-student fencers. The first of these events was held in Glasgow at Caledonian University on the 23rd & 24th January 2010. Due to the huge success of this event it is intended that we will run a second training camp around May 2010. Applications will be available for this website.

A list of affiliated fencing clubs can be found on the Scottish Fencing website at http://www.scottish-fencing.com/clubs/section_list.asp
