While Cricket may traditionally be the preserve of those south of the border, there are plenty of opportunities to play the sport as part of a real upsurge in interest in the game in Scotland.
During the winter months, many University Clubs play indoors to ensure that when the fine weather and the summer months do arrive they are perfectly placed to take advantage. A Scottish Universities Indoor Cricket tournament takes pace in February, which acts as a qualifier for the British Universities Indoor Cricket Championships later in the year. This year, SUS Cricket hopes to pilot a new indoor league to increase the number of competitive opportunities available to students and further improve standards.
After the Easter vacation, outdoor fixtures in the Scottish Universities Leagues take place involving Universities from across Scotland during the short university Cricket season. Extending to three divisions, the top league fosters a good standard of Cricket with plenty of opportunities for the less accomplished player to get involved in the lower leagues. At the end of the season, the best teams from the league structure go forward to the various BUCS knockout competitions against the best university teams from across the rest of the UK.
Top performers from the league, based on current form and trials, are invited to represent Scottish Universities in the Home Nations Cricket Championships, and in annual challenge fixtures against Scotland U19s and the MCC.
