SUS Badminton includes not only a Men’s and Women’s League, but also a combined Mixed league, ensuring that the best team across the board is rewarded with the title of Scottish Universities Badminton Team Champions.
The three leagues run together in a coordinated programme, with Universities taking one another on in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed contests in one fixture. The fixtures take place on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from October through to January. The winners of the Men’s and Women’s League qualify for the latter stages of the British Universities Sports Association knockout competitions from February onwards, where they come up against the best University teams from across the UK.
The Scottish Universities Badminton Championships take place in February over a single weekend, and comprise individual, doubles and mixed doubles Championships in a knockout cup competition. As well as deciding the eventual winners of these titles, for both men and women, these Championships act as part of the selection process for the Scottish Universities Badminton Team. Players are selected on known form and on their performance in these Championships for the Home Nations Badminton Championships, and fixtures against English, Welsh and Northern Irish Universities.
Outwith the competitive sphere, Badminton is one of the most popular sports in Scottish Universities, with many students taking advantage of the opportunity to play fun, and recreational badminton on a regular basis and in a social and supportive atmosphere.
