Track and Field Athletics amongst the Scottish Universities is a friendly, competitive programme, with a number of exceptionally talented student athletes involved in the Scottish Universities set up - both presently and in the past. University Clubs can provide excellent access to resources and training facilities, and well trained staff to support training programmes for the athlete. Many high-class student athletes on the national and international stage take advantage of the sports bursaries and expertise offered in Scottish Universities.
Training opportunities for the winter months are rigorous and well-supported, preparing the athlete - whether a world-beater or a first-timer - for the summer competitive season. Of this, the peak is probably the British Universities' Outdoor Athletics Championships in early May, at which many Scottish students compete with some distinction against students from across the UK. In addition, there is a full Scottish Universities programme, including both the SUS Indoor Championships (February) and Outdoor Championships, which includes all the track and field events one would expect at these events.
Further, in October of each year, the lower-key and introductory Scottish Universities Freshers' Match seeks to introduce new students to the sport and its set-up in Scottish Universities. In addition, there are occasional challenge matches including battles for the Appleton (Edinburgh v. Glasgow) and Spencer French (Inter-Area) Trophies.
Many students also demonstrate their abilities in Scottish Championships - including gaining medals in the National, U23 and U20 Championships - and represent Scotland in prestigious events the world over.
